Starbucks Raised Its Prices

I don’t know if you noticed or not, but Starbucks has raised its coffee prices. This means that the chai latte or Oreo Cookie Mocha Frappuccino is costing you more this month. I confess that I hadn’t noticed, but that is probably because I rarely get a coffee out, unless it is a sort of emergency. For example, I am trapped in the car on a three-hour road trip or a four-hour round of errands, and it is the afternoon, and my only option to avoid a caffeine headache is the Starbucks at the rest stop or the strip mall. … Continue reading

It’s Crayola’s Birthday!

Happy Birthday Crayola! Crayola makes me smile.  I know it may sound a bit silly but bringing out a new box of Crayola crayons is one of my favorite things to do with my kids.  Afternoons spent with a new set of crayons, plenty of paper, and giggling kids, will always be some of my favorite memories. And yes, it must be Crayola.  We are crayon snobs in my home and only Crayola will do.  When my son was little he thought crayons equaled Crayola and was surprised to learn other crayon companies existed.  My oldest daughter used to organize … Continue reading

Check Out These Disney-Inspired Outfits

This season legendary jeweler Chopard has created a special Haute Joaillerie line just for Harrods of London, one inspired by Walt Disney Princesses.  The co-president and artistic director of Chopard, Caroline Scheufele, is quoted on HauteLiving.com as saying, ““The world of Walt Disney has often been an inspiration for a variety of Chopard [pieces]. I am very happy to have been given the opportunity to design the famous Princesses’ pieces of jewelry.” I’m not a fan of jewelry, I never have been.  I have no interest in wearing pieces myself.  But I think these are really pretty to look at, … Continue reading

Mallory’s Birthday was on 12/12/12

There has been a lot of talk about 12/12/12 and how it will only happen once in 100 years. Wouldn’t it be cool if your twelfth birthday fell on that date? Mallory Taylor got to celebrate her “golden birthday” on December 12, 2012. A “golden birthday” might also be called a “lucky birthday”. It is the birthday when you turn the age that matches that day’s number. For example, let’s say that your birthday is on the fifth day of a certain month. The year you turn five is your “golden birthday”. It has been said that this is a … Continue reading

My New Mom Obsession – Old Children’s Books

I’ve got a confession to make – I am thoroughly obsessed with old children’s books. When I read to my boys at bedtime, we choose from a varied selection of books that we borrow from the library and books that we own. Some of the books I like, others not so much. Then there are a few that are just amazing, and those tend to be the ones that were written and published years before I was even born. I am unsure why those older books are so captivating, but they are. Dylan seems to enjoy them too, and for … Continue reading

Happy Birthday Dylan

It’s nearly official. Dylan went to bed as a two year old, and when he awakens in the morning it will be his third birthday. Good night, toddler, good morning, preschooler. I’m not sure that I agree with all of those people who say that “it goes by so fast”, but that might be either because not enough time has passed and I’ll be saying it a few years from now or because I have been lucky enough to stay home with him and experience (nearly) every waking moment of his toddlerhood. There is no one word that sums up … Continue reading

How Much Would You Spend on a Moonbounce Birthday Party?

My seven-year-old daughter, or miss popular as we like to call her, has been invited to a number of fun birthday parties, everything from a hip hop dance party to a rock-climbing party. Her own birthday is coming up, and she wants a cupcake-moonbounce-girlie party for all of her friends, whatever that means. The moonbounce idea was actually her father’s, who thought renting a moonbounce might be fun for the kids. I agree that it would be, but unfortunately, since her birthday is in November (and we live in an area that has dramatic changes in seasons), it will be … Continue reading

Birthday Cake Part II

Making chocolate wafer cookie for my son’s ice cream cake was a bit different from the kinds of cookies I normally make. Wafer cookies need to be cooked long enough to be crispy and in my mind over baked. I am a huge stickler about over baking cookies because I like my cookies soft and gooey (they taste so much better). However, I had to go against my years of baking experience and “over bake” the chocolate wafer cookies! Once my over baked cookies cooled, my son and I smashed them into small crumbs, mixed the crumbs with melted butter, … Continue reading

Birthday Cake Part I

My son is obsessed with birthdays. He loves to see the birthday candles lit, he loves to sing, “happy birthday,” and he loves to blow out the candles. In theory he also loves to eat the cake but more often than not he will eat the frosting and leave most of the cake. Knowing all these birthday related thing about my son, I wanted to do something a little different for his birthday cake. In preparation for my son’s third birthday, I decided to make him an ice cream cake instead of the more standard birthday cake. While my son … Continue reading

Daddy’s Birthday Part II

I did however find the somewhat rare swiss gruyere cheese with relative ease. In addition to our weekly groceries, I also needed to find Vermouth for the French Onion Soup. We checked out and headed home to continue with our birthday preparations. Once at home (and after the groceries were put away), I started on freezing the ice cream in one of those very trendy no ice and no salt ice cream makers. With my ice cream base chilled nicely, it only took about twenty minutes for the ice cream maker to work its magic. With the help of my … Continue reading
