Boys Will Be Boys

I am so amazed at the difference between my boys and my girl. As a baby, my daughter used to sit and play quietly with a cup and spoon “feeding” her baby doll, while my boys are all rough and tumble play. Even as an 11 month old. My baby has picked up all the truck noises from his big brother. His favorite thing in the world is pushing the fun big trucks around that his older brother has. I keep them hidden under my 3 year old’s bed, but the baby has figured out where they are, and makes … Continue reading

Parenting Boys

As a single mom I often worried about raising my son alone. I grew up a total girly-girl; boys were a total mystery to me, now I was left to navigate raising one on my own. Needless to say, I was overwhelmed at the task that lay before me. As a woman I wasn’t sure I had what it took to raise a boy. I didn’t know anything about cars or trucks or superheroes, but I soon learned that what I did have to offer was just as important. Boys need to know how to empathize with others. As mothers … Continue reading

Boys and Anorexia

Anorexia is typically seen as a girls’ disorder, and this can have fatal results for boys whose disease often goes undiscovered too long, as parents, friends and loved ones don’t recognize the signs until the disorder has a firm hold on its sufferer, often with fatal results. According to the National Eating Disorders Association, there are at least one million males in the United States that are fighting anorexia or bulimia. Some affected by these psychological illnesses are as young as ten years old. These numbers are probably lower than the reality. There is more of a shame when a … Continue reading

This is Boys on Adolescence

Once I saw a great illustration of the difference between men and women. It was grossly simplistic, of course, but like all great illustrations, it captured the core of so many things in a single image. Actually, there were two images. The first image was of a rectangular box. It was completely covered in dials, knobs, levers, and latches. The heading on the image was “Woman.” The second image was of the same rectangular box — but with only a single on/off switch in the middle. The heading on the image was “Man.” I remember laughing out loud when I … Continue reading

Two Aging Playboys in Trouble

Some men and women think of Gene Simmons and Hugh Hefner as the ultimate playboys. After all, Simmons has been a rock star for almost 40 years. By his own admission, Simmons believes he has slept with almost 5,000 women in his lifetime. Despite that fact, he has been with his partner, Shannon Tweed, such as it is, for the past 28 years. Although the two never married, they had two children together and seem to live in a harmonious if not exactly monogamous state. But, that may not be the case anymore. Simmons and Tweed have often bickered about … Continue reading

Give Boys Super Reading Powers

In many ways my 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old nephew are like two peas in a pod. They both enjoy racing Hot Wheels, collecting rocks and pretending they are wolves in the wild. However, when it comes to books, the path splits and while one willingly devours tales of whimsy, the other heads for the hills in hopes that a stray title doesn’t accidently fall in his lap. It is a well-known myth that girls excel at reading while boys, due in large part to their superior spatial awareness, kill at math. And so it goes with my two cuties. My … Continue reading

“Princess Boys”

Boys who love dresses and the color pink aren’t exactly considered “normal” in our society. While girls who play with trucks are often simply referred to as tomboys, boys who want to play with dolls or wear dresses are discouraged from doing so. And as we know all too well, people who are classified as different, especially from an early age, are often ridiculed. They grow up with less self-esteem and the bullying they often endure has led some to take their own lives. Cheryl Kilodavis was a mom much like many of us, encouraging our girls to play with … Continue reading

Boys VS. Girls in Scrapbooking

I had a little girl first. That’s when I dove head first into the world of scrapbooking. I loved all the adorable papers, and embellishments, flowers, bling, etc. etc. etc. that I could put on her layouts. It was so much fun, and so girly. Since that is how I started doing the more modern style of scrapbooking, I am a little lost when it comes to how to scrapbook for a boy. Does anyone else have this problem? So, I find that I want to put things on the layouts that maybe aren’t quite appropriate like papers that look … Continue reading

Mama’s Boys Forever

If you were over 21 and raking in $400,000 a year, would you still be living in your childhood home with your mama? If you were Major League Baseball players Tyler Ross or Neil Walker, then the answer would be a resounding, “yes.” As in, yes, I could be sent down to the minor leagues any day for seasoning, so why invest in a blinged out mansion when I can stay home and have my mom do my laundry. Much to do has been made of the recent Wall Street Journal article that essentially outs the two pro baseball players … Continue reading
