Away from Home for the First Time

Tonight was going to be a romantic evening. It was supposed to be my daughter’s second sleepover with her grandparents. Despite my great trepidation about the first one, it went well. Her grandparents managed to get her to bed at a somewhat reasonable hour, although she woke up quite early. And she didn’t miss us too much. Pancakes were involved. Tonight was a different story. We went out to dinner and watched a movie, and at ten pm, the call: she was crying and she needed to be picked up. Ah, nothing like mom and dad to the rescue. With … Continue reading

Are Fetal Hiccups a Good Thing?

Every time my son gets the hiccups (which is at least once a day), I am reminded of when I was pregnant and his hiccups would make my whole belly move. I used to fill a tumbler half full with water and set it on my belly to watch the surface of the water move with each hiccup. It was a fun way for my husband to see what I was feeling all the time. When I noticed that the hiccups were coming once or twice a day, sometimes more, I wondered whether they were a sign of something good … Continue reading

How to Increase Your Milk Supply

If you are worried that your young baby isn’t gaining as much weight as you think he should, or if you don’t feel as though you are producing enough milk, you may want to try some methods to increase your milk supply. Here are some tips. First let me say that sometimes it may seem as though you don’t have enough milk because your baby seems ravenous, when you are actually producing plenty of milk. The constant feeding could be because your baby is going through a growth spurt. Your pediatrician or a lactation consultant should be able to help … Continue reading

Baby’s First Check Up 4

Your baby’s first check up is an involved examination that allows your baby’s doctor to asses the overall health of your infant, as well as check for anything that is serious or might develop into something serious. In this series, I have been taking a look at everything that is involved in your baby’s first check up. Hips You may see your baby’s doctor take a hold of your baby’s hips and move them back and forth and around the hip joints. I always thought this looked rough and reminded me of getting a chicken ready to roast. But this … Continue reading

Baby’s First Check Up 3

What does your baby’s doctor need to examine for the first check up? We have been going through the different areas of that first examination and talking about your baby’s healthy body. Chest Your baby’s doctor will listen for a while to your baby’s chest. First of all, the doctor is checking the heart beat to make sure that there are no abnormal sounds or beats and that the rhythm of the heart is just right. Possible structural problems may be evident when listening to the heart. The lungs also get a good checkup, as your baby’s doctor makes sure … Continue reading

Baby’s First Check Up 2

Within 24 hours of birth, your baby will have his or her first official check up. This is an important examine that will let you know the health of your baby and if any intervention needs to be done while you are still in the hospital. Yesterday, I covered some of the areas that your baby’s doctor will cover. Now, let us continue. Nose and Mouth Your baby’s doctor will check the inside of your baby’s mouth. One thing that will be examined is whether or not the front of the tongue is attached too tightly to the floor of … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: July 2008

Two of my three children are summer babies. That is, they were born in the summer and had their first months surrounded by sunshine streaming in the windows, the sound of birds chirping, and days spent wearing nothing but a diaper and a “onsie.” I made sure that they had Fourth of July outfits ready, even though one of them arrived a week after the holiday. I guess he just wasn’t interested in the parade. Do you have a summer baby, too? We had a lot of new information to share this past month, such as recall notices and new … Continue reading
