Baby’s First Plane Trip- Part II

A little while ago I wrote about the fact that my baby was going to experience his first plane trip. I had a lot of anticipation regarding how he would do, but I was confident he would do great considering my older two kids have always been great at flying. The flight out there was pretty uneventful. We left on time, I had to wrestle baby a little bit because he is in that grabby, crawly, “I need to move!” stage. So, it was hard having him as a lap baby for two and a half hours. However, I did … Continue reading

Our Daughter’s First Easter Part I

My daughter’s first Easter began with a hug from her big brother followed by lots of smiles and some laughter. She is always incredibly happy in the morning and Easter day was no exception. In preparation for early Easter Mass, I nursed her on both sides and gave her a good burping before dressing her in her Easter outfit. She wore her “party dress” a dress that I found on clearance at my favorite baby boutique the day after christmas, a pair of sparkly cream and silver metallic tights, and silver ballet flats. I had her pose for a few … Continue reading

My First Pet

As long as I can remember I’ve wanted a dog. In preschool when I was around three-years-old we had the assignment to write out our Christmas present wish list. A dog was at the very top of mine. At first my wish for a dog might have just been the childish desire for one that many kids get, but my love of animals has never gone away. Unfortunately, my parents were never very interested in the work most pets, cats and especially dogs, entailed, especially as they knew that a child of my age wouldn’t end up taking any real … Continue reading

Away from Home for the First Time

Tonight was going to be a romantic evening. It was supposed to be my daughter’s second sleepover with her grandparents. Despite my great trepidation about the first one, it went well. Her grandparents managed to get her to bed at a somewhat reasonable hour, although she woke up quite early. And she didn’t miss us too much. Pancakes were involved. Tonight was a different story. We went out to dinner and watched a movie, and at ten pm, the call: she was crying and she needed to be picked up. Ah, nothing like mom and dad to the rescue. With … Continue reading

Babysitting Duties for Murphy, Mr. Meow, and Tabby

Yesterday morning around seven I got a call from our across the street neighbor and good friend Cindy. She was in a pinch. Her second oldest boy, Josh, was sick, but she was supposed to set up the book fair at their school that day. “Is there anyway you can watch him for a few hours?” “Of course!” Initially she needed to drop him off at 7:30 when she left to take her other son to school, but her husband decided to take the morning off. That way she could set up until about noon, come home, and he could … Continue reading

Grateful for Baby

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I decided to think about all the things that I am grateful for about my job as a Mother to my sweet little baby. Yesterday, one of my older children was sick. I had very little sleep, and had been up since about 2 am. Needless to say, I was pretty grouchy when the sun started to rise and I had to continue on with my daily duties as a Mom. But, then my baby woke up. I walked into his room, and he smiled at me (like he always does). I thought to myself, … Continue reading

Can You Really Afford Cable?

Forget about alcohol, tobacco, Facebook or chocolate; cable TV is one of the most addicting entities around. Just ask the kids who spend hours upon hours watching it. Then, ask the parents who use it as a babysitter. These days it doesn’t take much to get moms and dads to admit that they’ve used cable to keep their kids occupied. Got an important phone call to make, turn on Nick Jr. Want to use the bathroom in peace, switch it to Cartoon Network. Desperate for a few minutes of uninterrupted me time, Disney Channel to the rescue. Cable is undoubtedly … Continue reading

A Close Call

While I was on my trip to Texas, I had a scary moment involving my baby. I was busy working on getting my bags packed to head home the next day. A family member had graciously offered to keep track of the baby while I packed. He was very needy on that trip and just wanted me the whole time, so I was grateful for the break. I stayed inside the lake house packing and occasionally glanced outside where my kids were on the pier with several adults. I wasn’t worried. I knew they were all being looked after. At … Continue reading

In the Water

…and then we got into the swimming pool. I handed the boy over to his mother for a quick spin in the water. This would be the moment of truth. Would he be happy with this giant pool of fun or terrified by the possibility for horror? As my wife completed her spin in the pool we realized that our son would end up liking the water as he had already started giggling. Once he saw me at the other end of the pool (still trying to convince myself to take the plunge and suffer the brief second of lung-stopping-shock … Continue reading
