Planning Your Baby’s First Birthday: The Outfit

I had a lot of fun designing a fun t-shirt for my son to wear to his first birthday party. I have also seen some really creative options available from artists on Etsy. What your child wears to her first birthday party is almost as important as the cake she is going to smash her hands into. A first birthday party outfit should only meet two requirements: it should be comfortable and it should be cute. Bonus points if it is washable and stain resistant. After that, it is all up to you. Here are some ideas to get you … Continue reading

Planning Your Baby’s First Birthday: The Guest List

This is a topic that I struggled with quite a bit when I was planning my son’s first birthday. Basically there are two sides to the debate when it comes to the guest list for a first birthday party. On one hand, the party is a celebration for the parents as well as the baby’s birthday, so of course the parents want to invite all of their friends. Chances are most of their friends also have small children, so they usually come along for the fun as well. A first birthday party has a lot of potential for a large … Continue reading

Planning Your Baby’s First Birthday: Decorations

First birthday parties are probably more for the moms than they are for the babies, but they are a lot of fun for the whole family. A lot goes into planning the first birthday party. Over the next week, I will go over all the little details of party planning, so you will be well prepared for your child’s very first birthday party. One of the highlights for me was the decorating. I love to decorate, so I had a great time designing cupcakes, a custom birthday t-shirt, a sign, and decorating the house. I decided to go with cupcakes … Continue reading

The Birthday Party

So it happened. Our son turned 1 year old. So crazy how fast this has gone. I’ll join the chorus of voices telling you how fast it goes (and it’s only been one year). I have a small (very very small) taste of how fast babies turn into adults. That first year of life is amazing. They learn so many new things. They learn to eat, sleep, grab, crawl, walk, talk, drink, laugh, smile, cry, play, and pout. They learn so much in such a short time that it is truly hard to comprehend. When we took our son to … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: August 2008

Isn’t it crazy the way babies grow so quickly? It seems that you just get used to one stage and boom they are already into another. Tonight, were busy getting the household all set for my eldest child’s first day of second grade. My two younger ones are excited and want to start school, too. It will be a busy month. Don’t worry about the missing last week of blogs. I’ve gotten quite a few questions about where I have been. The Baby Blog tends to go on hiatus the last week of the month. That may change in the … Continue reading

Birthday Traditions From Around the World

In honor of the multitude of parents who read our forums and enjoy our blogs and for the multicultural families who adopt their infants, toddlers and children from around the world, I wanted to do a tribute to birthday traditions from around the world. This week, my nephew will turn a year old. It is so hard to believe that he’s been with us for a year and yet at the same time, it feels like he’s always been a part of the fabric of our lives. Thailand According to old traditions in Thailand, the parents purchase as many birds … Continue reading

What Names Run in Your Family?

You don’t necessarily have to be a genealogist to notice that certain names in your family tree appear more than once. Obviously, surnames are going to be connected to a lot of people. Often, you will find that a first name, or a middle name, is handed down from one generation to the next. What names run in your family? I come from a huge family. I have honestly lost count of how many cousins I have. Both my mother’s side of the family tree, and my father’s side of it, come from long lines of very fertile people. It … Continue reading

Using Compromise with a Toddler

There is a reason that they call it the terrible twos. Two-year-olds tend to want to assert their own independence and opinions, even if they don’t quite make sense to us. A limited vocabulary also adds to their frustration because they can’t always communicate what they want and may have trouble being understood. While you may be surprised that this discipline technique works (notice that discipline means guidance; it does not mean punishment), compromise can be a very effective of dealing with some of the issues that we face with the terrible twos. It gives the child a sense of … Continue reading

Frugal Goodie Bags

Birthday parties for kids can be fun, although the cost of these parties can quickly add up. One of the costs that can quickly get out of hand are the goodie bags. Although some parents do get very elaborate with goodie bags (one family gave out $50 toy store gift cards and tickets to the circus), even filling the bags with traditional small toys and candy can can add up. This coming Saturday, we are having a birthday party for my two boys, and we want to offer goody bags to the guests at the end of the party. We … Continue reading

Celebrating Baby New Year

Not everyone celebrates the New Year with a glass of champagne and a toast at midnight, many mothers and fathers around the globe celebrate the arrival of the baby New Year with a baby of their own. But there is one newborn, born last night, which will stand out above all the rest born today, January 1, 2007. He was born in Singapore in the first minute of the first hour of the first month of this New Year. Though many other babies have been and will be born today, this young man, who as of six hours ago did … Continue reading
