baby Your little one is just perfect. But she still may be vulnerable to baby skin problems. Most of these problems are innocuous and will go away with just a little home treatment. Some common baby skin problems could need a pediatricians attention. Here is what you need to know about the skin problems that may affect your baby. This is part two of a two-part series.

Eczema

Eczema is a skin rash that should be examined by a pediatrician, especially if this is the first outbreak. It is a very itchy, scaly rash that may develop tiny red bumps that ooze. You will usually find it on the cheeks and thighs, but it can occur anywhere.

The danger with eczema is is because of two reasons. The first is that with scratching, the rash can easily become infected. The second reason is that eczema is often associated with food allergies, so it is important for your pediatrician to rule this out. Often when you remove the allergen, the eczema will clear. It is also important to keep your child's skin well moisturized with baby creams. Avoid any lotions that contain alcohol. There is a debate over whether more frequent or less frequent bathing helps, so check with your doctor.

Heat Rash

Heat rash occurs when your baby becomes overheated. It usually occurs in the summer, but it is not unheard of for babies to get heat rash in the winter as well, due to indoor heat and overdressing. You'll often find heat rash in the folds of the skin, such as around your baby's neck, under the arms and wherever clothing fits tightly. Treat heat rash with a cool washcloth or a warm bath, and dress your baby in loose clothing. If the rash worsens or your baby develops a fever it could be something more serious.

Our son has eczema, and we have found the key is to be on the ball w/ the store brand eucerin. We apply it in the morning and right before bed, and if he gets a break out, we apply hydrocortizone cream several times a day. I also need to make sure his nails are cut short so he doesn't scratch apart his skin when it itches!

Those little nails can be killers, can't they! Eucerin is great because unlike some other lotions, it doesn't contain alcohol (which makes things worse).
