Tree-Sitting

In our front yard there sits a tree. This tree very clearly took root prior to my birth. This tree is beautiful and my family and I currently cherish it. After having lived in what was practically a desert for a number of years we are very excited to have such clear signs of vibrant life so close to home. Our front yard is a cherished part of our new home. Every single time we open the door or look out of the window we see this magnificent tree. Our son has taken it upon himself to appreciate the tree … Continue reading

Christmas Presents: Will You Spread Them Out?

Based on last year, I don’t think our family will have a problem with Christmas overload, but for some small children, that is a very real possibility. Will your toddler be able to handle opening all of her gifts in one sitting or will it become overwhelming for her. The thought of becoming overwhelmed from opening too many gifts may seem like a foreign concept to adults, but to a young toddler, the drastic change might be a little unsettling. They are not used to getting so many new things at once. They might not know what to play with … Continue reading

Picking Out Your Baby’s Christmas Outfit

With Christmas a little more than a week away, you might be planning how to dress your baby for his or her big Christmas debut. If this is your baby’s first Christmas, her wardrobe is a big deal. Will she wear a “Baby’s First Christmas” shirt, a dress, or a Santa suit? She’s going to be in a lot of photos, so choose wisely. My philosophy on special outfits is “keep it simple.” Sometimes, something understated and elegant will actually have the biggest impact. I love to see layered and accessorized outfits featuring a blend of neutrals and a touch … Continue reading

Christmas Tree Shopping

It’s December. The last month of 2010 started this morning. Christmas is just around the corner. Next Tuesday is Glee’s Christmas episode, although the Christmas album was released weeks ago. ABC Family has been airing holiday movies for months and three children’s Christmas specials aired last night. Christmas lights have been glowing on houses all around and I know a number of people who have finished putting up all the Christmas decorations. The last year I fully decorated for Christmas was 2007 when we had Pumpkin and Gemini. I don’t remember why I didn’t deck our halls in 2008. In … Continue reading

Christmas Club

Remember Christmas Club accounts? The Clubs were popular during the Great Depression. The point of the account was to deposit money regularly throughout the year and then withdraw the funds before Christmas. The account earned interest and was probably set up like a CD. It was a great tool to take some of the stress out of Christmas shopping. It’s so much better to prepare for the event than to go into debt with spending. The end of November is the wrong time to start a Christmas Club for this Christmas, so what can you do to minimize the damage … Continue reading

Tying Knots on Trees

This past week my family and I decided to get an early start on the upcoming holiday season. We got in a car the day before Thanksgiving and selected a Christmas tree for our home. This is the first year we were going to have a real tree in our home for the holiday season. Last year we happily purchased a three foot tall fake tree with lights. There is a photograph somewhere of my holding our very young son in front of the tree as he stared wide eyed looking at the small lights. As he is older this … Continue reading

Baby-Proofing The Christmas Tree

I’ve been brainstorming a lot lately about our Christmas tree. With a toddler in the house, whom we affectionately call our “little monkey,” there are extra precautions to be taken to make sure that our Christmas tree is safe, both to and from our child. We don’t want our tree hurting our son, and we don’t want our son hurting the tree. The easiest way is to create a physical barrier in the form of a play yard baby gate, which can be wrapped around the tree. The only problem with this, though, is it is not exactly visually appealing, … Continue reading

Your Baby & Holiday Hazards

Sorry about the break I took from baby there, I didn’t mean to be gone for several days in a row, but if you check out my Fitness blog, I explain what’s going on with me over there. In the meanwhile, let’s talk about the rapid arrival of the holiday season and what we all have going on. From the cooking to the decorating to the shopping and the wrapping and the holiday gatherings, there’s a lot to do for moms and dads and even more to keep track of. It’s important to remember that whether this is your baby’s … Continue reading
