Don’t Underestimate Your Toddler!

The amazing thing about a toddler, besides the fact that they seem to have unlimited energy, is how quickly they can figure out the things we think they’ll take years to learn. For example, I remember a few months ago I let my son hold the tube of diaper cream while I was changing his diaper. I honestly believed he could do nothing to that tube, because he was only slightly over a year old. To my absolute shock, I glanced over while cleaning him up and noticed he had unscrewed the cap and was putting it in his mouth. … Continue reading

Blowup Pool

Last summer I bought my toddler daughter a blowup pool. It was really cute with a sprayer and a slide. She had fun in it all of one time, if I remember correctly. A bad windstorm blew through our area and took our pool to our neighbor down the street. We ended up with another neighbor’s pool. Unfortunately, our pool met with a popped end. This summer I wanted to get a decent sized above-ground-pool. There are so many regulations on even above-ground pools for foster homes that I decided to not bother. I may still get the one I … Continue reading

How to Protect Your Baby from Stinging Insects

A new study reveals that an increasing number of kids in the United States are allergic to bee stings. Fortunately, scientists also found that the majority of babies, who suffer allergic reactions to insect stings, eventually outgrow the allergies. Still, babies and bee stings never equate to a happy situation. Bee stings are a painful annoyance that cause soreness, some swelling and redness. What’s more, during the summer months, your baby’s chance of getting stung by honeybees, wasps, hornets and yellow jackets increases dramatically if you spend a lot of time in the great outdoors. Don’t let a stinging insect … Continue reading

Baby Proof Your Pool

With much of the country sweltering in the midsummer heat it’s no surprise that kids of all ages are seeking solace in cool bodies of water. After all, there’s no better way to beat the heat on a blistering hot summer day than splashing around in a pool or pond. This is true for babies too. Having a pool or pond on your own property is extremely convenient, but it is also a tremendous responsibility, especially if you have young children around. Studies show that having a fence, which completely surrounds your pool, hot tub or pond, is one of … Continue reading

Helping Your Baby Manage the Fear of New Things

Babies are new creatures in the world and are naturally curious about the things, people and happenings around them. This can often get them into trouble as when they are exploring something that could be dangerous, such as an unprotected stairway or a hot stove. Because of the danger, we baby proof our homes and keep a close watch on our little ones. Babies also come with a healthy does of instinctual fears that can help them stay out of danger, such as the fear of falling, a fear of loud noises and even a fear of the dark. These … Continue reading

Toddler Safety & Your Peace Of Mind

While you can hardly expect your toddler to take responsibility for their own safety and it is indeed the burden of the parent to provide a safe environment for their child – you can set the examples by which your child will learn about safety and keeping themselves safe as they grow and develop. As with all lessons for your children, your example is the one they will learn from the most. How you behave, maintain your home and the vigilance you keep can often mean the difference between averting disaster and serious injury for your little one. The following … Continue reading

Top 10 Tips For Dealing With Electrical Hazards In Your Home

Years ago our family suffered a terrible tragedy as a result of electric shock. A seemingly innocent frayed toaster cord was later found to be the culprit. This simple household device found in practically every home in the universe turned into a deadly weapon. Not a lot has been written about the risk of death from electric shock. The media tends to focus on potential fire dangers in homes, the risk of poisoning, and ways to baby proof a house, but little is said about how to prevent electric shock. The best way to reduce the risk of death from … Continue reading

Prepare for the Worst

You haven’t witnessed the epitome of a helicopter parent (or Capri Sun mom) until you’ve seen me cheering on my young daughter as she boogie boards at one of Hawaii’s most popular beaches. And by cheer I mean desperately try to protect her from being creamed by a wave, sucked into whitewash or swept out to sea by a nasty current… without her knowing I am doing anything more than applauding her rad moves on a foam board. Call me a freak, but I stand by my paranoia. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), drowning is the second … Continue reading

Time for a Safety Inspection

The application is finally completed; your references are getting their reference letters, so now what? Now you will begin going through the entire checklist. You will need to have a safety & fire inspection. If you call your local fire department they will usually come to your home and do the Fire Inspection at no cost to you. When they come out they will need to see and test working smoke detectors in each bedroom, the hall between bedrooms, the kitchen and living room. If your home has burglar bars you will not pass the inspection. You need to have … Continue reading
