Tick-tock, tick-tock… the countdown to Mother’s Day is on, and if you are planning to make mom a gift from the heart with your two hands, then you had better get started. Some keepers include: Frames: No mom can resist a photo of her kids. Or better yet, a picture of her and her kids together. However, instead of gifting mom with a plain photo, why not kick it … Continue reading

One of the Best Gifts You Can Give Your Child: a Lifebook

A “lifebook” in the adoption community has similarities to a scrapbook, a baby book and a storybook. However, its main purpose is to provide the adopted child with a sense of continuity and a way to make sense of the past. Most adoptive parents have plenty of photos dating from their child’s arrival. But some adopted children have been known to believe that they were not born as other children are born, that they literally came from an airplane or an agency or sprang into existence as preschoolers. Others are old enough to realize they had a prior existence. While … Continue reading

A Unique Baby Shower for Preemies

We, being ever the party loving crowd, had planned our good friend a train themed baby shower for the arrival of her first boy. We bought the paper goods and decorations. Someone else was working on the party favors. I’d ordered the cake. Everything was set for the shower to take place about 7 weeks before she was due to give birth. However, our friend’s baby had other plans. He arrived 10 full weeks before she was due. Obviously, the shower was the absolute least of our concern. Thankfully, despite being 10 weeks early, he was fine. He survived and … Continue reading

March came in like a lion, and like many other months, it’s going out like a cheetah. The month flew by and now Easter and Mother’s Day is right around the corner. This, of course, means I have only a few weeks to create a slew of holiday gifts to give to the grandparents and other beloved friends and family that do so much for us throughout the year. However, instead of boring photo mugs, totes, mouse pads and blankets, I am planning to make more personalized gifts emblazoned with some of the best images I have taken in 2011. … Continue reading

The Alternative Gift Registry

I never realized that some people have a negative view towards store registries until reading a very interesting essay on GetRichSlowly.org, entitled, “Wedding Registries: A Love-Hate Relationship,” by Betsy Teutsch. The author recently wrote an update on her own blog that details how her son and daughter-in-law created an alternative registry on AlternativeGiftRegistry.org.The alternative registry allowed the couple to list general needs, rather than specific items from one specific store. While they were able to link to specific items when desired, overall the list allowed guests the freedom to pick out their own gift and still have the convenience of … Continue reading
