Baby Blog in Review: April Thus Far

What can I say other than ‘oops’? I forgot to post a week in review for the baby blog last week. I was just coming back from vacation, had mountains of laundry and other sundry things to take care of and well, I just forgot. So this week, I will bring you the baby blog review starting from April 1st! Sunday, April 1 April started off controversially with a blog entitled Weak White Males and the Difference Race Makes in Preemies. This is a discussion on the statistical tendency for males, especially caucasion males to mature the slowest in the … Continue reading

A Quick Guide to Your Baby’s Teeth

Maybe it’s just me but I knew all sorts of things about my baby’s development. I knew when it was normal to hit all sorts of milestones from the first smile to jumping up and down! But I didn’t really know a lot about dental development in infants. It seems to be somewhat of a forgotten subject. I knew to brush the gums once a day. I knew to brush teeth after meals but when it came to knowing things about the normal eruption of teeth or how many teeth a toddler should have–I drew a blank. So in case … Continue reading

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

If you bottle feed, you’ve undoubtedly been told not to put the baby to bed with his bottle. The reason is that it could cause baby bottle tooth decay also known as early childhood caries. (As you’ll see in my next blog, caries are not restricted to those babies who are bottle fed.) Here is what you need to know to help prevent serious dental problems in your baby. Decay happens when sweet liquids are given in a baby’s bottle and left on the teeth for long periods of time afterwards. (Like giving a bottle at night and not brushing … Continue reading

Fact Or Fiction: The Later Her Teeth Come In, The Healthier They’ll Be

Because my daughter was so late to cut her first tooth, my husband and I had the “pleasure” of hearing many opinions on the matter. Many experienced parents shared that their children were also late to get teeth, and several young parents shared how many teeth their babies already had. The most common remark we heard, however, went something like this: “You’re lucky she doesn’t have teeth yet. The later her teeth come in, the healthier they’ll be.” This often was followed with stories of people not getting teeth until 14 months of age and going on to never have … Continue reading

When Should My Child Have His First Dental Visit?

Yesterday I spent the morning at the park with my youngest kids, another mom and her child. As I was trying to navigate pushing two swings on opposite sides of the swing set and avoid getting hit by all of the swings in the middle, my mom friend asked me a good question. “Do you think he is too young to see a dentist?” Her child was three-years old and hadn’t yet been to the dentist. There was an issue with his teeth that she was concerned about, but she wasn’t sure if he was too young to be seen … Continue reading

Newborn Dental Hygiene

You should take care of your baby’s teeth and gums even if she doesn’t yet have any teeth. Research shows that establishing good dental hygiene at a young age, even for an infant, can lead to a lifetime of good health. Here is some advice on what you need to do to take care of your baby. You may or may not have heard of the condition known as baby bottle mouth. Serious harm can come to a baby’s teeth when bottled filled with juice, milk or formula are allowed to sit in a baby’s mouth for long periods of … Continue reading

Fluoride and Infants

When it comes to your infant, do you really need to worry about fluoride? The answer is a definite yes. Fluoride can protect budding teeth, but more importantly, too much fluoride can lead to a condition called fluorosis. Fluoride in the right amount is helpful for preventing tooth decay and strengthening your baby’s teeth. If you baby is given too much fluoride, then the teeth can become black and mottled. This mainly just affects the appearance of the teeth and not the health of the teeth, but it is far from attractive. Fluoride can makes its way into your baby’s … Continue reading

3 Bad Bed Time Habits You Shouldn’t Start

I almost hesitate to post this. The truth is one family’s bad habit might be another’s god send. As someone who doesn’t do sleep deprivation well, I find myself returning to this motto: do whatever allows you the most sleep. But there are a few things that are definite no-no’s and/or will make your life harder down the road. Bad Habit #1: Putting Baby to Bed with a Bottle This isn’t my opinion. It’s the opinion of the American Dental Association, as well as the American Association of Pediatrics, as well as the World Health Organization. Why, is this such … Continue reading

Cavities on the Rise For Young Children

A recent report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control is noting an increase in cavities in children between the ages of two and five. This report follows up on an earlier study of more than twenty-six thousand Americans conducted between 1988 and 1994. Study participants had their oral health monitored through interviews and regular checkups. A repeat of the study took place between 1999 and 2004 — approximately twenty-five thousand Americans were involved the second time around. Again, participants were monitored through interviews and regular checkups. The CDC compared the two studies to take a look at dental health … Continue reading
