Babies in the News: To Swap or Not to Swap?

This story is absolutely unbelievable. Two families in the Czech Republic have been forever changed by a hospital mess up when two babies were switched at birth. When you first read the story, it’s easy to see how perhaps the mistake could’ve been made as both mothers share the same first name. A judge has ordered them to swap babies back, but after ten months, they’ve grown rather attached and have refused. How They Found Out One of the dads became suspicious when his little baby was sporting blonde locks while he and his partner both have dark hair. So … Continue reading

Baby Blog Week in Review: August 7 to August 11

We have had a busy week in the baby blog! If you haven’t had time to catch up on all your reading, here it is all in one place. Grab a cup of coffee and have a seat! August 7 Why Banning Formula Isn’t Awful This week the New York City Department of Health banned free formula in New York City public hospitals in an effort to promote breastfeeding. The internet has been abuzz about the ban both for and against it. Although I actively promote breastfeeding when possible, I actually think that banning formula is good economic sense. Babies in the News: Identical Triplets Are Born

A British woman gave birth to identical triplets in Austria. The triplets were conceived naturally and the chances of identical triplets forming are about one in two hundred million! What is especially rare in this situation is that all three are identical. In the world of natural conception, triplets generally form when just one egg out of two fertilized eggs, splits into two forming one set of identical twins and then a third fraternal sibling. Not that triplets naturally conceived in and of themselves are common at all. Although the babies were born at 32 weeks, they each weighed a … Continue reading

Babies in the News: You Can Do That On Television

I need to preface this article with the fact that just a few weeks ago, I saw this babies in the news story on the television show Grey’s Anatomy. The story wasn’t exactly the same as the one I am going to share with you here, but the tale did feature a young woman with two wombs, carrying two children and the babies were conceived at different times – so the trick was to deliver the infant that was ready to be born and protect the one that needed another six weeks of gestation. Babies in the News In September, … Continue reading

Why the US Infant Mortality Rate is So High

In case you hadn’t heard, the US has the second highest infant mortality rate among the developed nations. If you’re thinking our health care system stinks and that’s why so many babies are dying. . .think again. While certainly universal access to health care (or lack thereof) does have an influence on whether or not mothers get adequate prenatal care, the reality is that the United States pushes the boundaries on what can be done in both fertility and neonatal medicine. Just to be clear: infant mortality means that a baby was outside of the womb, took at least one … Continue reading

The Trouble With Weight Charts

In the UK, there is considerable pressure being placed to get rid of the 20 year old weight charts and use more up to date weight charts that are reflective of babies who drink breast milk. The 20 year old charts are based on formula fed babies who tend to grow more quickly than do breastfed babies. But the weight chart problem is not one that is strictly related to the UK. Breastfed Babies are Too Skinny Whenever a breastfeed baby is told to gain more weight, the rallying cry is ‘beware the growth charts’. And it is true that … Continue reading

The One Class I Would Sign My Baby Up For

A few days ago, I wrote an article about parents who signed their babies up for all manner of classes to enhance their chances of getting into the right preschool which in turn would lead to the right kindergarten, which in turn would lead to the right elementary school, and so on. I think in general parents are putting too much pressure on their children to learn too much, too early. Numerous studies show that playing is the best thing for toddlers in order to enhance their development and plain old, free conversation with parents is far better than television. … Continue reading
