From the Playground to Surgery – But He’s Just a Baby

It happened Monday afternoon. My nephew was spending the afternoon with his father and his father took him to a playground. My nephew is just 18 months old and while he was playing on a flexible bridge and toddling across it, he fell over and got the fingers of his right hand caught in a portion of the equipment. The baby reacted badly to being held tightly and yanked his hand out. A Nightmarish Odyssey My sister-in-law, the baby’s mother, works in a pediatrician’s office. My nephew was taken there immediately and then transported to the emergency room. They were … Continue reading

Babies in the News: Good Things Come In Threes

This is a great baby in the news entry, imagine if you will, you and your husband are expecting your third child and your first two babies were big ones (9 pounds and 10 pounds respectively). This is the case for Dusty and Lynette Jones of North Dakota. With their third child, they planned a home birth – wanting to enjoy having the baby in the security and comfort of their own home with a trusted midwife in attendance. On November 14th, Lynette went into labor and though they were expecting another big baby. Imagine their surprise when instead of … Continue reading

Bed Rest & Work From Home Moms

Do you watch the show Desperate Housewives? I don’t, but you can hardly look at the news without seeing an article here or there about what is going on behind the scenes with the actresses and more. Recently, one of the headlines was all about Marcia Cross, one of the actresses, who is expecting twins in real life. I’m not sure if her pregnancy was written into the show (I admit I have no idea on the details because I’ve never watched the show). Currently, Ms. Cross is under a doctor’s orders to be on bed rest. So what is … Continue reading

Yesterday, doctors were successful in their attempt to separate 5-month old twins who were conjoined at the chest. The procedure took six hours and the physicians at the Mayo Clinic stated that the procedures went exceptionally well. The twins were conjoined at the chest and had been in the hospital for 99 days, but yesterday marked their first day as separate individuals. There were 40 people on the medical team involved in the surgery that separated the two young girls. The twins began their stay at the Mayo Clinic when doctors implanted tissue expanders. The expanders were designed to slowly … Continue reading

Babies in the News – Couple Freezes Their Daughter’s Growth

The following news story that I want to comment on is a difficult one to discuss. While it is not about a baby per se – it affects all of us who have babies. It affects those of us especially who have babies with special needs or disabled infants. In this case, parents of a young girl who is severely disabled mentally are electing to use medical treatments to prevent their child from growing up physically. They want to keep her child sized the rest of her life because she has only the mental ability of a babe of three … Continue reading

Babies in the News: You Can Do That On Television

I need to preface this article with the fact that just a few weeks ago, I saw this babies in the news story on the television show Grey’s Anatomy. The story wasn’t exactly the same as the one I am going to share with you here, but the tale did feature a young woman with two wombs, carrying two children and the babies were conceived at different times – so the trick was to deliver the infant that was ready to be born and protect the one that needed another six weeks of gestation. Babies in the News In September, … Continue reading

Babies in the News: Baby Taken at Knifepoint

It’s enough to make a person ill, but a month old boy was kidnapped at knifepoint on December 1st. Smugglers who were seeking payment for having helped bring the boy’s parents to the United States illegally took him. The boy’s name is Bryan Dos Santos Gomes. His parents came to the United States from Brazil, but were unable to pay the smugglers who brought them the fees they demanded. The boy was taken when he and his mother were out with friends. They were approached by a woman in a black sports utility vehicle and taken for a ride. The … Continue reading

Every day there are stories in the news about the deaths in Iraq, about the suicide bombings, the attacks and more. It’s enough to make your heart heavy even if you have no one serving overseas. But today I want to share a story with you that I read in the newspaper this morning and it’s a story that made me smile for a bittersweet victory and a message of hope in the middle of a situation that cannot be described as … Continue reading
