Babies in the News: Good Things Come In Threes

by Heather Long | More from this Blogger

This is a great baby in the news entry, imagine if you will, you and your husband are expecting your third child and your first two babies were big ones (9 pounds and 10 pounds respectively). This is the case for Dusty and Lynette Jones of North Dakota. With their third child, they planned a home birth - wanting to enjoy having the baby in the security and comfort of their own home with a trusted midwife in attendance.

On November 14th, Lynette went into labor and though they were expecting another big baby. Imagine their surprise when instead of one baby, Lynette gave birth to three - triplets Marissa, Silas and Anna. They join their older siblings Christopher, age 3 and Abigail, age 1.

The Midwife Moved Fast

Marissa was the first one born and midwife had to move fast when she realized there were more babies coming. Neighbors recently held a benefit to assist the Jones with supplies and more because they were not prepared for triplets. Of the three, the girls did very well after birth, but Silas needed oxygen. The midwife provided a canister, but was forced to call 911 when that ran out and the baby began to turn blue.

The baby boy spent about 17 days in the hospital, but currently he is home and doing very well. According to the AP news report, he put on a few ounces at the hospital, but a week after being home he gained a pound. Currently, all the triplets are weighing over 8 pounds and this is great news.

Carrying Multiples without Realizing It

Multiples are typically born with a lower birth weight than their single birth counterparts, but I would imagine that carrying multiples feels different from carrying just a single baby. Still, it's a wonder that without realizing it, Lynette Jones carried the triplets to term and they are thriving so well - that within two months of birth they've nearly achieved the birth weight of their older siblings.

The Jones family has been blessed with caring neighbors and healthy children. My only question in all of this, is did her pre-natal care not involve a sonogram at any point and if it did, how did the technician or doctor miss this?
