If you had an October baby, congratulations! I hope that you will spend some time with us here at Families.com, as we bring you the latest news and tips for you and your family. Here is the Baby Blog month in review for October. October 1st Insect Repellent and Young Children Protecting my children is the number one priority, but one thing that I tend to avoid is insect repellent. I figure that putting additional chemicals on my kids is not the best idea, that is until now. These days, a mosquito bite is not just an annoyance, but it … Continue reading

It has been an exciting year in the baby blog with a few changes in bloggers, several news stories, a few series started, and of course lots of information and reflection. Babies in the News: To Swap or Not to Swap?

This story is absolutely unbelievable. Two families in the Czech Republic have been forever changed by a hospital mess up when two babies were switched at birth. When you first read the story, it’s easy to see how perhaps the mistake could’ve been made as both mothers share the same first name. A judge has ordered them to swap babies back, but after ten months, they’ve grown rather attached and have refused. How They Found Out One of the dads became suspicious when his little baby was sporting blonde locks while he and his partner both have dark hair. So … Continue reading

The Baby Blog in Review: September 16 to September 29

It’s that time of the week again when I review what’s happening in the baby blog. If you have reading to catch up on, go grab a cup of coffee and have a seat! Sept 16 Why Use a Baby Hammock? A baby hammock is a great way to help ease your little one back to sleep because instead of producing a motorized motion, a hammock sways and bounces with the babies own movements. Therefore, when the baby stirs, the hammock responds and gently lulls baby back to sleep. Sept 17 How to Dress Your Baby for Cold Weather Stop … Continue reading

Babies in the News: Be Careful What You Ask For

This story annoys me to no end. An Australian woman is suing her doctor and embryologist because after a series of IVF treatments, she got twins instead of a singleton. She’s suing for approximately $300,000–the estimated cost of raising a second child, including private school tuition and an additional $13,000 for unexpected medical expenses. The woman and her partner say they were devastated when they found out they were expecting twins rather than just one baby and had seriously considered putting one up for adoption. How on earth you choose which one is beyond me. IVF Ignorance? I suppose in … Continue reading

Babies in the News: Cocaine Laced Breastmilk

This is a sad, sad story. There are so many things that I can’t understand about this story but I’m getting ahead of myself. A woman was breastfeeding her 5 month old daughter. Apparently the mother was on drugs and her milk was tainted with cocaine. Her baby died from a cocaine overdose. The mother was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter, a felony which would have given her 9 months in jail. However, the prosecution reduced the charges when she agreed to a plea deal. She pled guilty to attempted man-slaughter, and in addition to the short stint in jail, … Continue reading

Respecting Your Child’s Privacy

Last week I was at a meeting of a group of parents who’ve adopted from Korea. The discussion turned to privacy issues. Many adoptive parents are so excited about our children. We love to share their stories. We are eager to correct stereotypes about adoption. (When you’ve seen babies three to a cradle in a baby home, you feel like buttonholing people on the street and asking them if they’ve ever thought of adopting!) People ask us about adoption. We are eager to give them information, to reassure them, but also to be honest so that an adopting couple will … Continue reading

Pregnancy Resources: Internet vs. Books

There are tons of pregnancy books out there, and I have even reviewed a few on this blog, but does a woman really need to buy a book when there is so much information available online? Well… yes and no. In my opinion, both internet resources and traditional pregnancy books have value. The internet is full of information, most of which is free, and is easily searched for specific answers. The sheer volume of pregnancy resources online is also its pitfall, however, since it is so full of duplicate and inaccurate information, which can be a pain to sift through. … Continue reading

Product Safety Recalls–Is Stuff Really Dangerous?

In recent months the news is filled with products that are being recalled. You can always get a full and updated list at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Generally, a recall is issued when a company discovers that there’s a potentially hazardous condition associated with their product. Most of the time no injuries result. However, the most recent recall, that of Kolcraft play yards, is a direct result of the death of a 10 month old boy. He was in the play yard and his parents didn’t remove the changing table that goes on top. As a result, there … Continue reading
