Babies in Cars

Two interesting stories in the news this weekend: both involving babies and cars and both with a happy ending! The first story I find particularly interesting due to the fact that it happened in Wisconsin's state capital and I have family that lives in that area. I hope they aren't in the habit of leaving their babies in a running parked car. That is what one mother did when she stopped at home to get some food and water in between errands. Someone decided that an unlocked, running car was too easy of a target to pass by, hopped in and drove off. When the man realized there was a nine-month-old strapped in the backseat, he quickly returned the car and ran off. Police looked for him using a search dog but were unable to locate the suspect. I'm so glad the mother's car and baby were returned to her. Even though the thief was dumb enough to steal a car, he at least had the heart to not steal a baby, too. I hope the mother would learn her lesson and not leave her baby unattended outside like that again. It only takes a few extra seconds to unstrap a baby from her car seat and carry her in on your hip. Better safe than sorry!

Well if babies aren't being stolen in cars, they are being born in them. A women gave birth to a baby girl in a cab in New York on the way to the hospital. Imagine the two police officers' surprise when they saw a cab driving madly towards them, with the driver honking the horn and yelling that a woman in the backseat was having a baby! While the husband panicked and the cab driver went crazy with excitement, one of the cops assisted the calm mother in delivering her baby while the other cop called for assistance. The little girl popped out about five minutes later. The police officer caught the baby and the EMTs arrived just in time to cut the cord and take them to the hospital. It was the first delivery for the officer, who had been taught how to deliver a baby using only a training video at the Police Academy. All in a days work, right?
