Making Baby Food

When I was a first-time Mom, I had no intention of making my own baby food. I was too overwhelmed with just being a new Mom that I just didn’t even entertain the idea. However, with my second, I wanted to give it a try. I didn’t have to buy a lot of tools and gadgets to make it easy and simple. But, I did have a lot of questions. One website I turned to was Wholesome Baby Food. This website is a great resource for any Mom that is looking to make their own baby food. It is full … Continue reading

Tips For Getting Your Young Toddler to Eat Healthy Foods

As your little one discovers more and more foods, he will also begin to develop preferences for certain foods over others. I remember boasting that my son would eat any vegetable placed before him. Well, I can’t brag about that anymore. Half of the veggies placed before him end up on the floor unless they are smothered in red sauce… which brings me to my topic for the day: how do you get your toddler to eat healthy? Rule #1: Provide a variety. One of the easiest ways to get your baby or toddler to taste and eat a variety … Continue reading

The Baby Food Diet?

Have you heard of the baby food diet? I was reading about it this afternoon and one writer’s experience with testing it out for one week. He lost 6 pounds eating just baby food and one adult-size meal per day. I think you’d have to be pretty desperate to lose weight to try this diet. I have had my fair share of baby food and I can’t imagine eating so blandly for a week. I always made a point to taste test everything before giving it to my son when he was eating purees. I didn’t want to give him … Continue reading

My Baby: A Bottomless Pit

These days, I’m convinced my 1-year-old has some extra storage space in her stomach she’s hiding from me. She’s not a big kid. She was huge at 6 months of age, then completely thinned out. In fact, I’m pretty sure her weight has stayed the same from 6 months until now. You’d think that a little peanut like her would have the appetite of a bird. No siree. That girl can pack food in like nobody’s business. A month ago, we’d eat breakfast together, and she’d consume a small amount of my daily bowl of oatmeal. Now, I have to … Continue reading

Avocados: The Perfect Baby Food

New parents probably receive a lot of conflicting advice when it comes to starting their babies on solids. Some say that, as soon as your baby starts reaching for your food, it means he is ready to eat it. (Does that mean that when my baby reaches for a bottle of beer, he’s ready for that, too?) Others claim that, if your baby doesn’t sleep through the night, adding solids to her diet will help her to sleep longer. (I’d like to find some of those people and make them explain to me why my daughter woke up to nurse … Continue reading

Introducing Solids Part II

Since I tend towards the unconventional and more researched based health and diet guidelines, I had no interest in giving my daughter (or son for that matter) the standard rice cereal which is overly refined and enriched. Instead, I wanted her first tastes to be as pure and clean as possible, hence the organic produce. Once my daughter sank her new bottom teeth into a soft sweet organic nectarine, her demand for solids only increased. I slowly began to introduce new foods to her diet in the form of little tastes. She was very excited to taste most of the … Continue reading

First Bite of Mom’s Chili

It has (thankfully) been growing somewhat cooler in the state of Texas during the last weeks. Nothing like the temperatures I hear of from other parts of the country. Sometimes social media can make you sad when friends elsewhere talk about thier favorite season of autumn while you enviously look outside at the summer-level heat emmanating off of the sidewalks outside your closed window. At any rate, my family is feeling the pull of seasonal jackets, foods, films, and other items despite their uselessness in our current climate. This led to watching a holiday film, making some cookies, and putting … Continue reading

Crackers

Our son has been trying to eat solids for a number of months now. His initial interest in food only extended to his fingertips. Once he figured out the whole “hand to mouth” thing he really became interested in food. What started out with a protruding lower lip and a confused look (avocado) has since turned into a monster who rapidly crawls towards any plate or utensil he sees. He carelessly abandons toys to one side or the other and monstrously crushes all others in his path. He moves as the monster truck: directly on top of his barriers. His … Continue reading

You Are Now Entering the World of Solids

We decided to start giving our daughter some “real” food last month. We previously had decided to wait until she was about a year old, but our curiosity got the best of us. Shortly after she passed the 8 month mark, we began the journey into the world of solids foods. We bypassed the rice cereal and canned baby foods and went straight to making our own baby food. We had read online and heard from trusted acquaintances that avocados are the perfect food, for both babies and adults, so we decided avocados would be the first food hitting her … Continue reading

5 Cultural Myths About Starting Solids

Believe it or not, much of what we do as parents, is culturally dictated. If we lived in another part of the world, we may not use diapers or cribs. We may walk around with our babies strapped to our backs or even breastfeed not only our own children, but our neighbor’s as well. So it is also with starting solid foods. When the twins were ready to start solids, it pained me to feed them jarred food. It’s different when you’re feeding one baby (or at least it was for me) but with two, I just watched the money … Continue reading
