My Last Blog

This is going to be my last blog as the Adoption Blogger for Families.com. I’m looking forward to spending the summer with my kids, possibly working at their school, and taking on new writing projects. I may well guest blog occasionally for this or other Families blogs. It seems the Adoption Blog will continue, so I hope this blog, along with Families’ forums, can be a source of information and community for adoptive parents, adoptees, and birth parents. Yesterday I could think of a million things to say in my last few blogs and wondered how I would fit it … Continue reading

How to Afford a Baby When You Really Can’t Afford One

This blog is actually the result of a lamenting mother who wishes she could stay home, wishes she could have more children but states she simply can’t afford it. Let’s face it, the economy isn’t doing anyone any favors these days. She says she can barely afford diapers. Understand that I’m not judging anyone here. Whether or not you want to stay home or go to work is your choice and it doesn’t have to be mine. But it makes me sad to see fellow moms lamenting over leaving their children in day care, wanting more but claiming unaffordability all … Continue reading

Did You Choose Godparents for Your Baby?

The concept of having godparents comes out of more liturgical traditions such as Catholicism. Different denominations have different “qualifications” for being a godparent. For example, in some churches it is suggested that the godparent be a member of the same church. However, I rather like the concept of having godparents–regardless of whether or not you’re religious and so bear with me for a minute here. Godparents are supposed to take the time necessary to build a special relationship with your child. They are supposed to share with them values and morals and take a vested interest in their lives. Obviously, … Continue reading

Rethink Those Sleeping Arrangements

I don’t mean the sleeping arrangements for your baby although it would be logical to assume so. What I mean is the sleeping arrangements for your older children. Let me explain further. When we found out we were having not one baby but two babies, we decided that we needed bunk beds for the girls and a loft bed for our son. The ‘play room’ (if you can call it that) is under the loft bed and this is the only play space the kids have. (If you’re not familiar with living arrangements in New York City just trust me … Continue reading

From the Playground to Surgery – But He’s Just a Baby

It happened Monday afternoon. My nephew was spending the afternoon with his father and his father took him to a playground. My nephew is just 18 months old and while he was playing on a flexible bridge and toddling across it, he fell over and got the fingers of his right hand caught in a portion of the equipment. The baby reacted badly to being held tightly and yanked his hand out. A Nightmarish Odyssey My sister-in-law, the baby’s mother, works in a pediatrician’s office. My nephew was taken there immediately and then transported to the emergency room. They were … Continue reading

Ask A Baby Blogger: Playing Rough with the Baby

My husband comes from a big family of boys, there are four of them and his dad. Our son is just eight months old, but they are always swooping him up and throwing him in the air. I was glad once when he threw up on one of his uncles. My husband gives me a hard time, because he says the baby is having fun so why am I so opposed. Help? I don’t blame you for being concerned. Honestly, you have to be careful when you are throwing a baby up in the air, your baby can’t communicate how … Continue reading

Sleep Disorder: Jeremiah’s Story

Tonight might be the last night I don’t get any sleep. In January my son Jeremiah will turn five. He was placed with us for adoption three-days before his first birthday and has NOT slept through the night even one night since he joined our family. For the first year I just lived with it thinking it might be normal for a little baby who had already been in the care of four different mom’s. I just resigned myself to the fact that he and I would share those hours in the middle of the night together and bond better. … Continue reading
