When the Bullies are the Other Parents

A study was done that showed that children and teens are getting bullied specifically because they have food allergies. In many cases, the bullies are other students at the school. Unfortunately, it has become clear that there are situations where the other parents are the ones who are behaving like bullies. In August of 2011, a controversy broke out at an elementary school in Florida. A seven year old girl, who was in first grade, had an allergy to peanuts. After Spring Break, students arrived at the elementary school and learned that new rules had been put in place. The … Continue reading

Protecting Yourself as a Single Parent

This has been kind of a scary week for me. Last Saturday I had the bright idea of taking Logan downtown to walk around Temple Square and see some of the sights of downtown Salt Lake City. We’ve done this on several occasions, attended outside concerts, and browsed along the streets together. But now, I’m afraid I am going to have to think twice the next time I consider traveling downtown just the two of us. We decided to take the Trax Train in order to avoid the stresses of parking in Salt Lake. The ride up wasn’t so bad. … Continue reading

Support Hotline for Parents of Children With Special Needs

All parents, no matter what their circumstances, can benefit from some support. Parents of children who have special needs also require support. In San Jose, California, a support hotline is being set up for parents who cannot leave home to attend a support group. In March of 2012, tragedy struck in Sunnydale, California. A mother named Elizabeth Hodgins killed her 22 year old son, George, and then killed herself. George had autism, and Elizabeth was his primary caretaker. Her husband, Lester, arrived home from work one day to find the bodies of his wife and son. He didn’t know what, … Continue reading

Must – Have Baby Items

In my last post, I talked about baby products that you don’t need. The logical follow up to such a list is a list of must – have baby items. Like the last list, this one comes with the caveat that all parents have different parenting styles and will therefore find different items useful. Here are the baby products that my family found to be the most useful. Baby slings are amazing. What’s more, they are simple and easy to use. When Dylan was born, I registered for and received a couple of baby slings. My parenting style largely follows … Continue reading

Why Parents Make Great Entrepreneurs

If you are a parent and you are thinking about starting a home-based business, you are in luck. Parenting and entrepreneurship have a few things in common, and that means that parents are likely to be very successful in home-based business ventures. What are these common elements, and why are they important? Sometimes parents, especially those of us who choose to stay home with our children and leave the workplace for a while, feel like they no longer have what it takes to succeed in business. This is why it is important to learn about the similarities between entrepreneurship and … Continue reading

Parental Creativity

Creativity is key when you are a parent. I bow down to the moms and dads, who can pull a virtual rabbit out of their respective hats, when their kid is having a mammoth size meltdown in the middle of Target. The other day I watched as a mortified mom dug deep into diaper bag and MacGayvered a mock pacifier from the bottom of a broken teething toy, some rubber bands and what looked to be a plastic Fisher-Price Little People farm animal. Unreal. Is the creativity gene innate or is something born out of desperation? Personally, I think it’s … Continue reading

Parents Peeved Over School Scare

My kindergartner freaks out when she sees a speck of blood, so I can only image her reaction to seeing bloody concrete, police tape and a chalk outline of a body on her way into school. Fortunately, she doesn’t attend class at Foxhill Primary in the UK. That’s where irate parents are chastising school officials for setting up a mock crime scene involving fake blood and a female teacher with plaster on her head. Apparently, school officials thought it would be a good idea to stage a violent break-in as part of a problem-solving exercise. Never mind that children as … Continue reading

Stress, Weight Gain and Depression in Adoptive Parents

“At least you don’t have to deal with the ‘maternity forty’!” chirped a colleague while I waiting for my third child’s arrival from Korea. Adoptive parents frequently hear comments like, “Oh, you’re doing it the easy way”. Now, having had a difficult pregnancy myself, I’m inclined to agree that MY adoption process wasn’t as difficult as my pregnancy. But I was blessed to have had the choice both to conceive and to adopt. Remember that many adoptive parents have been dealing with the grief of infertility. They often feel that their dreams of a family are at the mercy of … Continue reading

Parents in the News: They Did What?

Feeling guilty about the 10-minute ear-piercing tirade you treated your rule-breaking teen to this morning? Don’t. After reading what the following father exposed his child to, your long-winded diatribe may seem like a gift to your kid in comparison: DIET FROM HELL Who knew Satan’s real name was Bob? According to police in Las Vegas, Robert “Bob” Blue, has got a lot to learn in the parenting department. The Sin City father allegedly chained his 15-year-old daughter to her bed because he felt she was overweight. Police say Blue used shackles to keep his child out of the kitchen and … Continue reading
