Adventures in Potty Training: Day 1, Morning

Well, the day has finally arrived. It is time to potty train our youngest child. Here are my experiences and adventures, practically as they happen.

I have been waiting for the weather to warm up past the 50 degree mark for a stretch of at least three days before I started potty training. This is because I have found that one of the quickest methods for training involves letting the child run around with a long shirt on and a bare bottom, something that just doesn't work when it is cold.

It so happens that we are in the middle of a bizarre sort of hear wave right now, with temperatures in the 90s. Strange, rights? Still, I thought I would use it to my advantage and planned on starting the training today.

We talked about the diapers going away, and I snuck down early in the morning to hide the remaining diapers in the basement. When my son got up from bed, I told him again that the diapers were gone. Then I found out that I had to run an unexpected morning errand. I reluctantly pulled a diaper out of my purse and declared that this one would be the last diaper.

After our errand, we got down to business, so to speak. Youngest son got bare bottomed and introduced to the potty. I got the juice and the salty pretzels ready to encourage plenty of potty opportunity. He promptly peed all over the floor and was surprised at what happened. We cleaned it up and I showed him again where he is supposed to go. A couple of false alarms later, and the bathroom floor has a confetti of colorful children's books littered on it. At least we got some reading in while he sat on the potty.

Fast forward to after lunch when we made a trip to the potty at his insistence. It was successful! Now it is time for underwear and nap. Hopefully the potty trend will continue.
