Planning a Baby Shower III

While I have attended more than a handful of baby showers, I have never planned one myself. I am discovering that I am going to need help getting everything done and organized. My sister’s mother-in-law has offered her house for the actual event to take place and she is also making an hors d’oeuvre. Now I am calling upon my mother and sisters to help me not only to prepare the food that day before and the day of the shower, but also to provide some of the food items. For the food I am thinking a cheese platter, a … Continue reading

What If I Don’t Get a Baby Shower?

Did you have a baby shower? If not, did you miss it because you had your baby the day your shower was to be hosted like a friend of mine or did your friends just not throw you a baby shower? Let me tell you a little secret – no one threw me a baby shower. In fact, when I was called upon a couple of years ago to pitch in for a baby shower for another friend, I was more than a little stumped. So What Do You Do If No One Throws You a Baby Shower? Throw one … Continue reading

Baby Showers – The History and Evolution of Gift Giving

Baby showers are a popular way of celebrating the impending arrival of a new baby. Many baby showers are thrown in the last trimester of your pregnancy and expectant mothers are showered with items they might need for their soon to be born baby. However, baby showers for the expectant mother are actually a relatively modern invention made possible by modern medicine. Originally, baby showers were not given for expectant mothers. In fact, very little was done for the impending arrival of the new infant. The standard was to wait until after the baby was born and had been around … Continue reading

A Unique Baby Shower for Preemies

We, being ever the party loving crowd, had planned our good friend a train themed baby shower for the arrival of her first boy. We bought the paper goods and decorations. Someone else was working on the party favors. I’d ordered the cake. Everything was set for the shower to take place about 7 weeks before she was due to give birth. However, our friend’s baby had other plans. He arrived 10 full weeks before she was due. Obviously, the shower was the absolute least of our concern. Thankfully, despite being 10 weeks early, he was fine. He survived and … Continue reading

Babies in the News: Earliest Living Preemie ‘Almost ‘ Goes Home

When I started writing this post yesterday, the title was “Earliest Living Preemie Goes Home” but apparently doctors decided not to release her. Just the same, I’m sure she’ll be released soon (within the month). Her story pushes the envelope of medical technology, what doctors understand about viability, and the miracle of NICU medicine. Little Amilia Taylor was born just under 22 weeks gestational age by cesarean due to complications with the mother. Doctors would not normally deliver a baby this premature but Amilia’s husband misinformed the doctors and said she was at 23 weeks gestation. So they intervened and … Continue reading

Finally! Some Common Sense in the Use of Antibiotics

Someone may call me neglectful but I don’t treat my kids’ fevers right away. (Except for my one baby who is prone to febrile seizures–totally different story there.) Nor do I rush to the doctor every time we get a case of the sniffles. I NEVER demand antibiotics. In fact, when my pediatrician prescribes them to me, I always make sure they really are absolutely necessary. Why? I really believe that antibiotic overuse is a serious problem. I think if parents realized how easy it is for a bacterial infection to become immune to particular types of antibiotics, they would … Continue reading
