A Playdate for the Girls Part III

Lunch time was a the most hectic part of the girls’ play date. They all wanted to eat at once, which is no great surprise when three infants are involved. This whole situation was slightly stressed by the fact that we only have one high chair and a tableless bumbo. The most upset girl got the high chair. I gave her some bits of cheese and frozen organic cheese to tide her over while I made her peanut butter toast. My daughter seemed to be the least upset (and it is no wonder being in her own house) so I … Continue reading

A Playdate for the Girls Part II

After the initial tumbling introductions, the girls begin to play… but not with each other. The girls were all clad in cute girly attire and new shoes. My sister’s daughter, who is the oldest at fourteen months, just got her first pair of sparkly tennis shoes two weeks prior to our playdate. By now she is a very accomplished walker even though she did not start to walk until after her first birthday. With her advanced walking skills she kind of assumed the role of queen bee. My husband’s sister-in-law’s daughter had also recently gotten a new pair of shoes … Continue reading

A Playdate for the Girls

While I was pregnant with my daughter, I wrote a blog about the pregnant women in my family and extended family. The short version of those blogs is that my sister, my husband’s sister-in-law, and I were all pregnant within eight weeks of each other with girls. We had made attempts to get the girls together in the midst of our diverse and busy schedules, but our efforts were thwarted by naps or illness … until today. This playdate was not planned weeks in advance but happened more by happenstance than anything else. My sister needed me to watch her … Continue reading

A Playdate with Exercise

As the summer heats up, we have been scheduling our play dates earlier in the day if they involve being outside in the heat. This past week the temperatures reached highs of just over one hundred degrees but we were able to avoid the discomfort of such high temperatures by going out early in the morning. On one of our recent playdates we made plans to go to the only lake within the city’s limit. This lake has a lot of nice features. It has a beach for swimming and sand for playing as well as a good sized playground. … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: August 2008

Isn’t it crazy the way babies grow so quickly? It seems that you just get used to one stage and boom they are already into another. Tonight, were busy getting the household all set for my eldest child’s first day of second grade. My two younger ones are excited and want to start school, too. It will be a busy month. Don’t worry about the missing last week of blogs. I’ve gotten quite a few questions about where I have been. The Baby Blog tends to go on hiatus the last week of the month. That may change in the … Continue reading

A Child’s Self Esteem and the Frugal Life

My daughter came home the other day from a doll playdate. The girls all brought their 18-inch dolls, you know the American Girl Doll kind. My daughter does have a real American Girl Doll, given to her on her birthday after more than four years on her wish list and some creative saving. She is fond of that doll, and has never once complained about the fact that it is her only one (it is not unusual for her peers to have three or four of these dolls as well as all of the accessories). She did complain though that … Continue reading

The Fire Truck Part I

Like most boys, my three year old son has a somewhat obsessive interest in big trucks. On trash days, he runs to the door to watch the garbage trucks as they make stops along our street picking up and emptying the trash cans. He is always the first to point out the yellow school buses whether he spots one while we are driving or if one drives past our house. His fascination with fire trucks began when he and his cousin watched a short video about fire trucks during one of our many playdates. This fascination was realized on a … Continue reading

Lakeside Fun

There is nothing more picturesque than spending the day at a lake. In my hometown we happen to have a lake right in the middle of the city. The lake is less than a mile from the bustle of downtown and it provides a place of reprieve for all. The city has done a great job making this spot inviting. There is a biking/walking trail that goes around the lake which also extends through the whole city. There are sailboats, canoes, kayaks, paddle boats, and bicycles available for rent as well as food for sale. There are docks for fishing, … Continue reading

Learning By Example Part II

The more time my daughter spends with her older (three months and four weeks) female cousins, the more she learns by following their example. My daughter seemed to have very little interest in sitting up on her own to play until she had a playdate with her four week older cousin. The two girls sat together interacting with one another for a good twenty minutes before going down unto their tummies. Following her cousin’s example, my daughter began to manipulate the toys differently than she had before our playdate. Within two short days she has mastered the ability to sit … Continue reading
