Simple Weekend Pleasures

Who says you have to splurge on a Disney getaway or a Six Flags splash-fest in order to make your kid happy this summer? In the few years that I have been a parent I’ve learned that children care more about the amount of quality time you spend with them rather than the amount of money you spend on them. Of course, my daughter is only six, so that theory is subject to change once she hits tweendom. Still, there’s nothing quite like bonding with your child in the great outdoors on a bright summer day. Just you, your kid, … Continue reading

My Toddler is Acting Like a Baby!

Sometimes you just have to set your agenda aside and hold a baby in your lap, or in my case, a toddler. The past couple of days have felt like we have taken two steps back. My son, who has been pretty independent lately, now has seemingly reverted and wants to be treated like a baby again. This morning I wanted to clean the kitchen, but immediately my son started crying with great big giant tears. “Hug! My Baby! Hug!” he cried out. Plan B is to get as much done on the computer as possible, since it appears I’ll … Continue reading

Get Your Wiggle on at Six Flags

My preschool daughter has never been a huge Wiggles fan. What’s more, she screams like a banchee every time I try to put her on an amusement park ride. And I’m not talking about those baby roller coasters that travel on a flat track, or those crazy toddler swings that spin around with modified reckless abandon. For the past three years my child has unleashed glass shattering, ear splitting, high-pitched shrieks each time I’ve tried to place her on merry-go-round horses (the paralyzed ones that don’t move up and down), baby boats (that barely move in a pool no bigger … Continue reading

When Children Regress, Part One

You have finally got your child potty-trained or moved her from a crib to a big bed all to herself. Things may be going along swimmingly and then something happens, and it is as if she had never progressed out of diapers or to sleeping independence. Regression is fairly common and it can happen for a variety of reasons. This does not make it any less frustrating or challenging, but it can help if you understand what is happening. The arrival of a new baby, a move to a new house, a divorce, death, travel or any myriad life changes … Continue reading

5 More Red Flags to Watch For in Your Toddler

Yesterday, I listed 5 red flags that you should watch for in your toddler. All of these things signal that something could be wrong. Keep in mind of course, that toddlers are little people and they develop on their own time table. However, if you sense that something is wrong you should always speak to your pediatrician, even if you can’t pin point exactly what it is. Many doctors will say that mothering ‘instincts’ are the best when it comes to early diagnosis of problems. (And often times early diagnosis equals more successful intervention.) With that said, here are 5 … Continue reading
