Christmas Shopping for Baby

Last night my husband and I perused the toy aisle in Walmart, looking for ideas for our son’s Christmas present. He is just over a year and a half now, and pretty much anything that has wheels or involves horses is sure to get him excited. The problem we’ve been facing is trying to find a toy that will not only reflect his favorite things, but will also be age appropriate and hopefully so for a long time. We don’t want to get him something that he will outgrow in 3-6 months. It should at least last until next Christmas … Continue reading

Baby-Proofing The Christmas Tree

I’ve been brainstorming a lot lately about our Christmas tree. With a toddler in the house, whom we affectionately call our “little monkey,” there are extra precautions to be taken to make sure that our Christmas tree is safe, both to and from our child. We don’t want our tree hurting our son, and we don’t want our son hurting the tree. The easiest way is to create a physical barrier in the form of a play yard baby gate, which can be wrapped around the tree. The only problem with this, though, is it is not exactly visually appealing, … Continue reading

Moms & Dads: Lighten the Load

Whether you have one child or five children (hi Valorie!) you know that stress is an unavoidable part of your life. Whether you work out of the home, inside the home or focus on being a stay at home mom or dad who runs the household – or you are some combination of all of these (and isn’t that exactly what the working parent is?) – then you know that stress can become so burdensome that you feel like you are drowning in it. We’ve talked about making to do lists and writing them down in a priority order and … Continue reading

Holiday Stress & Your Baby

Are you and your family traveling to grandma’s this weekend? Keep in mind that the holidays provide an entirely different kind of stress for your baby whether he or she is an infant or a toddler. Holidays are times when families see each other — sometimes for the first time since the previous holiday. Aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, grandparents and more will be surrounding your little one with a great deal of love and more often than not – a lot of touching. Let’s Not Think About the Colds & Stuff Viruses – though often transmitted during the holiday shuffle … Continue reading

Holidays, New Babies & What Kind of Mom am I?

So your baby was born recently and you are just getting the hang of getting up in the middle of night feedings and changing the diaper while doing three other things at once. You are sleep deprived. When you get a chance to shower it seems like a reason for a national holiday and here you are, looking at the holidays and wondering how do you manage with the baby and the lack of sleep and the fact that you are either going to be traveling or having to endure family and friends descending upon you and your family for … Continue reading

5 Great Christmas Gifts for the Homeschooling Family on Your List

I am always looking for something that’s educational but is not the equivalent of getting socks and underwear to my kids. This is no small feat, but it can be done. Consider putting the following in the stockings or under the trees of the homeschoolers you love! 1. Educational Games Everyone loves a good board game. So why not pick up a gift certificate for an online store like Fun Again.com? Too many choices? I am personally partial to plunder chess. Leap Frog has also come out with a series of board games that help teach early learning skills. 2. … Continue reading

Surprise under the Christmas Tree

Trying to keep children out from under the Christmas tree is hard enough for a two-parent home but then as a single parent the challenge grows. The Christmas holidays are so exciting. People mill about, hurrying to complete the holiday shopping. The neighborhood is lit up with bright Christmas lights, front lawns are dotted with twinkling reindeer, and Santa is sitting on the roof. Mothers are busy in the kitchen preparing sweet holiday goodies while the air is filled with the fragrance of hot butter rum. Then as you look at the Christmas tree, you find ribbons, shiny ornaments, little … Continue reading
