Happy Kids

Yesterday I was in a funk of a day. I had not gotten enough sleep the night before, which always leads to me dragging all day long. I find that I struggle more with my responsibilities as a mother when I feel this way. I want to be lazy, I am not as patient, I feel bad for not keeping my kids engaged in something worthwhile. Unfortunately, I like to believe that every mother has a day or two like this now and then. We are not perfect as mothers. Some days, our kids watch a lot of TV. That … Continue reading

Genealogy Podcast Roundup – Week of December 5, 2011

It is time for the weekly Genealogy Podcast Roundup. This is where to find the newest episodes of your favorite genealogy podcasts. This week, you will also find some episodes that relate to Christmas traditions. 89.3 KSBJ is not, technically, a podcast. It is a radio station that plays “Contemporary Christian Music”. They will be playing Christmas music from right now, through Christmas, (and may continue after that). You can listen to it directly through their website, as a live stream. Christmas music is a very traditional part of how many families celebrate Christmas. NPR has an episode of “Morning … Continue reading

Winter Boredom Busters

I don’t know about you, but as a stay at home Mom, I find keeping my kids entertained and free of boredom gets harder and harder as they get older. Of course I could plop them down in front of the TV and they would love that, but I try to limit screen time to 2 hours or less per day. My daughter is in school now, so she is not bored too much, but my son is a whole different story. He is almost 3 years old, and about to be stuck in the house with me and a … Continue reading

The Wet Cupcake Incident: A Lesson in Risk Management

The other day, I learned a lesson about owning and operating my own business. Fortunately, the lesson that I learned was not very physically, emotionally, or economically painful. It was, however, quite wet. Two weeks ago, I arrived at my Wednesday farmers’ market and set up my booth as usual. My booth consists of a sun/rain canopy with a table underneath it. Business was slow for the first hour or so, and I was making the most of the idle time by playing with my son. It was the first time that I had let him sit directly on the … Continue reading

Do you need to get out of the house? Need more ways to entertain you and your baby this fall? Make a cool or rainy fall walk into a fun walk – it doesn’t take much! 1. Go outside in the rain or just after a rain. Where I live, it rains a lot in the fall and winter. In fact, the year that my daughter was born, we broke the winter rain record and had rain for more than 30 days in a row. Needless to say, we went outside in the rain. Invest in a good pair of … Continue reading

25 Ways to Entertain Your Baby

“I can’t keep this kid entertained!” exclaimed my exasperated husband. Truth be told, entertaining a baby is easy for some and difficult for others. Some of us just have an easier time getting into the “baby mindset” to figure out what will be entertaining for someone whose life is still measured in months. For the rest of us, I present this list! Just be prepared to look silly… 1. Lean over your infant and slowly move your face closer until you touch noses for a brief second, then pop back up and act surprised. 2. Play peek-a-boo by holding a … Continue reading

5 Ways to Spend Less Eating Out on Vacation

Traveling costs can add up. And one of the biggest expenses after air fare is the cost of food on vacation. Here are five ways that you can be frugal when it comes to the cost of dining out when you are out and about. Cook at “home” Depending on where you are staying, you may be able to get away with cooking at home. Most hotels offer a refrigerator free of charge, and you can use it to store lunch meats, milk and other items to feed you your lunch and breakfast. Bread, peanut butter and jelly can be … Continue reading

The Importance of Family Time

Numerous studies have shown how important it is to children to have quality time with their parents and siblings. From research that shows that children who have a regular family dinner time are less likely to be involved with drugs, to surveys of children that say that the one thing they really want more of is time with their parents, there is no doubt in my mind that family time is very important. There really is no time that is too early to establish the routine of family time. You can start with eating together at a meal. If you … Continue reading

Saving Money with a Toddler

Isn’t it amazing how little ones can cost so much. Toys, food, clothing, equipment and entertainment can all add up at the end of the year. Here are some ways to save when you have a toddler. Potty train your toddler as soon as he is ready. This can be anywhere from 18 months to 4 years old, depending on the child. Of course you don’t want to force a child to train, but many toddlers are really ready sooner than you might think. And, the sooner you train, the fewer diapers you’ll have to buy. While we are on … Continue reading

Eat Out for Free 2

Who doesn’t love getting things for free? Eating out for free is especially nice, since it combines the necessity of eating (everyone has to eat) with the entertainment of getting out and trying something new. And with the price of gas being so high, you may be able to justify a trip out if the meal is free. Previously, in the post Eat Out for Free, I shared some ideas for getting free meals, such as the trail run. You can click here to visit that blog and read more: Eat Out for Free. Now, let me share four more … Continue reading
